What Music Coaching Is All About!
| ||||||||||||||||||
| Coaching usually follows this format: | |
| 1) | A free, preliminary meeting in which you and the coach see if it makes sense to work together. |
| 2) | An initial session to see what you want to work on and to create a coaching strategy. |
| 3) | Regular on-going coaching sessions (in person, by phone, and/or online), usually lasting 30-45 minutes, and held weekly. |
| 4) | An agreed upon time-frame depending upon your goals and the progress you wish to make. The initial time frame may be 8-12 sessions with an evaluation at the end to see if additional time is warranted. |
| 5) | Coaching sessions may be focused on one specific challenge you are facing, or on a much broader set of musical, business or personal interests or concerns. |
Coaching is not teaching even though it is educational.
Teaching usually takes the form of an instructor lecturing, demonstrating, and
sharing knowledge with students. Coaching helps you discover the best answers
for you. Coaching reinforces learned concepts and skills until they become
second nature. Your coach encourages exploration and
discovery. If you are seeking instruction, please click

Coaching is
not consulting.
Traditional consulting offers answers and expertise. Coaching facilitates
discovery by assisting you to find your own unique answers. Your coach provides
her own expertise whenever it is useful, but never does things for you. The
primary role of your coach is to listen, question, observe, challenge -- all in order to support
the achievement of the goals you set.
Coaching is
not about leading or following.
Coaching creates a partnership that is focused 100% on your success.
A few more things you should
know about coaching:
The coach is
not always right.
We are all human, so we all make mistakes. Coaches are no different. For
example, your coach may suggest an idea that’s not a good fit for you, or share
a feeling or intuition that may not be right on target for you at that moment.
This doesn’t mean that the “coaching” isn’t being effective. We can learn as
much from what we DON'T want as from what we DO want. Your coach will
always encourage learning from these experiences.
Your coach is not superior to you.
Coaches are experts in utilizing a process and some tools that can help you to
accelerate your learning and to take effective action. You and your coach are
equal contributors in this relationship. The focus is on the relationship and
the learning process, and how together they can best help you get what you want.
You and the coach are equally important in this process.
A coach may not observe "social niceties."
A coach may interrupt your conversation or do other things that may not seem
socially polite. This can occur for example if you have already made a point but
seem to be stuck on it, or possibly when an insight or intuition needs to be
shared in the moment. A coach is focused less on social niceties and more on
what is going to allow you to move forward. Your coach is not there for your
approval, but for your betterment.
The coach may use tools from areas other than coaching.
Coaches sometimes remove the coaching hat and put on a training hat (sharing a
skill) or a consulting hat (formulating strategies), when these things might
help you to move ahead more efficiently.
The "Post-Honeymoon" phase almost always occurs.
Coaching is usually a relationship that may last anywhere from three or four
months to a year or two, sometimes longer. Most major changes in our lives take
some time to fully actualize. Usually within the first few months, after the
“honeymoon” phase of being excited about new directions in their lives, some
clients will start to question, and sometimes self-sabotage their plans and the
coaching process. It helps to be aware of this phase; and it usually is in the
learner’s best interest to work on through it and to continue their journey
to achieve goals mutually agreed upon prior to the start of the journey.
Our coaches observe
Guidelines and honor their
Responsibilities.
Do you believe that even though you're working hard, you're not at peak performance?
Under what circumstances should you hire a coach?
Here are 7 good reasons to hire one:
When you need a sounding board--someone outside your sphere of influence who is entirely objective regarding new ideas, approaches, techniques, or pressing concerns.
If you would like someone to give you a realistic assessment of your strengths and weaknesses and help define steps on how to improve.
If you need guidance on improving general skills such as time management, organizational skills, practice skills, overcoming stumbling blocks in your music career, communications, etc.
When you need to make a change in direction and need someone to help guide you through the process.
When you need a "reality check" about what's going on in your world.
When you seem to lack focus or motivation to stay on track.
When you need an advocate in your camp.
There is something powerful that happens when you share your dreams and goals with someone who is committed to helping you achieve them. It's the power of partnership! It is so much easier (as well as a lot more fun!) when two people are singing the same song!

Music has played a key role in my live -- even since my conception. While I was in the womb, my parents sang in the church choir, went to concerts and recitals, and performed as much as possible. My formal training began over 50 years ago at the piano. My brothers and I started at the piano and learned instruments as soon as we were able to physically handle flutes, trombones, and trumpets! Everyone in the family enjoys music! Performing became second nature from elementary school forward. I began teaching and competing in junior high school (middle school) and carried the torch on through high school and college winning ribbons, medals, scholarships and contests galore.
After graduating from University of Illinois, I went on to add public schools to my résumé teaching music at K-12 levels. I've taught flute and piano to youngsters and oldsters! Two years in the Puerto Rican public school system taught me Spanish while I taught K-12 music and choir as well as teachers' master classes. ¡SÍ, HABLO ESPAÑOL!
Most of my life has been spent teaching and coaching in service to coaxing the best from anyone in my sphere of influence. Take advantage of my broad spectrum of life experiences - in music, in business and in my personal life.
As your coach I will not have your answers. What I will have are the powerful questions, methods, and skills that will move you forward toward achieving your musical goals. My knowledge is available to support your learning, but you will become motivated to experiment, discover, practice, and learn on your own.
Along the way, we will also question some beliefs and values (the ones we have about ourselves and the world around us) in order to find out which ones are helping and which ones may be holding you back from the achievement of your goals. This discussion promotes the positive self-talk which builds confidence in your abilities and your achievement.
None of this makes any difference if you and I don't connect. If you want to work with a coach committed 100% to your success, knows music, and is a generous listener, I am the coach for you.
I offer a complimentary 20-minute coaching session so we can decide whether we "connect." If not, I will help you find your coach from among other coaches in my network, or you may find benefit from other available services offered by:

If we decide to work together, as my client, you will honor your commitments, report on your progress, and be open to receiving feedback.
