Music Theory and
Musicianship
"Music theory encompasses the nature and mechanics of music. It often
involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more
general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of
music: rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and
texture."

This class makes theory fun! It is designed for learners interested in
studying the "book-learning" basics of music in preparation for, or to augment,
music appreciation and study in their field of interest.
Learn to read and understand the written language of music! I say
'language' because like a language, music has its own set of letters,
expressions, composition, and rules. A knowledge of music theory is
required and practiced in all music lessons. It is through the knowledge
of music theory plus musical skills that musicianship blossoms.
Many computer aids, software programs and internet resources will be used to
enhance student participation and enjoyment. If some of these resources
are not available at home, learners will have access our computer lab.

performance opportunities. Rates vary, and
materials are not included in the rates.
General Ensembles and
Invitational Woodwind Ensembles will be scheduled based on enrollment. General ensembles
are open to all woodwind players. Invitational Woodwind Ensembles will
perform in music recitals or public venues as available. There is a nominal fee
to participate.
