Private Lessons

Students who take private lessons improve more quickly and develop confidence faster with intensive, individual instruction.  Private lessons are tailored to your individual needs and are available in increments of  30 minutes, 45 minutes or one hour. These lessons are designed to be fun and rewarding so that learners develop an enduring love for and appreciation of music.

Private individual and group instruction is offered to children, teens, and adults in Boerne, TX and the surrounding Hill Country area,  and is available as follows:

Most individual and group instruction is also offered online using internet, audio and video conferencing technologies.

Group Lessons

Many students start their music education by taking advantage of group lessons.  Group instruction is offered to children, teens, and adults in Boerne, TX and the surrounding Hill Country area,  and is available as follows:

Piano

Free piano lessons abound on the internet! However, you just can't beat private instruction for focus, human interaction, real-time correction of common playing errors, as well as the immediate feedback provided by a real live teacher.

Internet learning can be a valuable supplement to personal instruction, but bad habits and/or techniques learned via unsupervised internet lessons may need considerable correction by your instructor. Make sure your instruction is well anchored in personal contact with your teacher.

Private piano lessons are available in half-hour, forty-five minute,  or hour long sessions.  Time during these lessons will be dedicated to learning to play the piano, learning music theory and musicianship, and practicing what's been learned to date.  Classical music training will be basis of all instruction.  As individual mastery improves, different genres and styles will be introduced including jazz, pop, and rock styles.

Every student is different and, though there is a standard basic curriculum, each lesson is customized to each student's individual needs, interests and abilities.

Rates for private lessons start at $35 per half hour of instruction;  a monthly travel stipend is added for lessons held at your location. A deposit is required for materials and sheet music which is not included in these rates. A registration fee in the amount of $50 is required for Fall, Spring and Summer Terms.

Music Theory and Musicianship

"Music theory encompasses the nature and mechanics of music. It often involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music:  rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture." Wikipedia

This class makes theory fun!  It is designed for learners interested in studying the "book-learning" basics of music in preparation for, or to augment, music appreciation and study in their field of interest.

Learn to read and understand the written language of music!  I say 'language' because like a language, music has its own set of letters, expressions, composition, and rules.  A knowledge of music theory is required and practiced in all music lessons.  It is through the knowledge of music theory plus musical skills that musicianship blossoms.

Many computer aids, software programs and internet resources will be used to enhance student participation and enjoyment.

UIL Coaching, Music Contests and Preparation

January and February find us refining, practicing and performing solos and ensembles in preparation for the Regional and State music contests.  Preparation begins in earnest for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Spring is also the time for competitions leading to awards and scholarships through several music organizations:  Texas State Music Teachers Association, National Federation of Music Clubs, local music clubs, just to name a few.  Coaching and performance preparation sessions are available to help you sharpen your competitive edge.

Coaching and performance preparation sessions are intended to supplement your normal course of study.  We work with a number of private music teachers who recommend that their students enroll for two to four coaching sessions to better prepare them for competitions.  Your success in performance and competition is directly attributable to your long term study with your primary instructor.  Our coaches offer short-term, goal specific sessions oriented to event specific performance.

Most UIL coaching and prep sessions are half-hour lessons. Rates vary. Time is reserved during our Spring Semester to accommodate a select number of coaching and performance preparation sessions, so make your reservations early!  Get more information.

Performance Coaching

Private, one-on-one, on-site performance coaching is available to learners wanting to overcome performance anxieties, enhance their performing presence, and perfect their musicianship and presentation.  Rates vary.

Music Appreciation

Music surrounds us and is with us from the moment we're born, perhaps earlier.  In fact, music has been with us since the birth of mankind in one form or another.  Music appreciation is all about learning more about those forms and enhancing our understanding of music, however you define it.  You do not have to know anything about music nor do you have to be a musician in order to take this class; you must simply desire to understand more about music.

One of the simplest, clearest definitions of music is found here:

From Simple English Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia that anyone can change

Music is an art that puts sounds together in a way that people like or find interesting. Most music includes people singing with their voices or playing musical instruments, such as the piano, guitar, or drums.

The word music comes from the Greek word Muse. In Ancient Greece the nine Muses were goddesses of music, poetry, art, and dance.

To better appreciate music, we need to better understand it.  In this class, we learn about sounds, instruments that have been created to make sound; how sounds are documented so that they can be reproduced by others;  how to listen to hear and recognize tonality, tempo, dynamics, phrasing, harmonies; how to better understand what the composer communicates through his individual style of music; and much, much more.

Group Classes meet online using Skype technology, once per week for six weeks, one hour per week, for a total of six hours. Internet access is a must for doing your research.  The rate for each class is $150.00.  Class size is limited to allow ample group discussion.

Music for Expectant Moms

This is your time to share one full hour with your unborn baby.  Some tired Moms have found this class so relaxing that they drift away to the music -- napping is not discouraged since you and your baby will still hear!  You may sign up for as many classes as you like.  During the four weekly sessions that make up a class, you will explore and practice:

  • a variety of relaxation techniques, some using music and some without music;

  • breathing using meditative as well as vocal coaching techniques (this is not a Lamaze class);

  • the importance of singing to your child;

  • lullabies, some of which might remind you of songs you heard as a child;

  • find or create your own special womb song that will:

    • encourage strong, early bonding with your baby;

    • help create a transition from the baby's inner environment of the womb to the outer world by using lullabies and your womb song after birth;

    • help nurture your baby’s early communication;

Study after study has shown that unborn babies can hear sounds and learn to distinguish music.  After 20 weeks of conception, the ears are fully developed.  Research has shown that one year old babies recognize music that they heard prior to their birth!  Learn to create and reinforce this musical bond with your baby!

Classes meet once per week for four weeks, one hour per week, for a total of four hours. The rate for each class is $100.00.  Learn more.....

Music As Therapy

Music therapy can be defined as the use of music by a trained professional to achieve therapeutic goals. This is a career field that is growing by leaps and bounds.  But, this class is about you and your use of music as therapy.  You become your own best therapist!

Music inspires, consoles, shouts out in anger, laughs with us, cries with us, cajoles us, transports us mentally back to times we marked with particular songs from our past.  Music is used in birthing rooms, bedrooms, living rooms and hospices to share joy, to ease burdens, to elevate moods and sometimes, to allow music to put into sound what we cannot put into words.

Harness the power of music and put it to work for your health and well-being!  Classes meet online using Skype technology, once per week for six weeks, one hour per week, for a total of six hours. The rate for each class is $150.00.  Class size is limited to allow ample group discussion and sharing.
