PianoFree piano lessons abound on the internet! However, you just can't beat private instruction for focus, human interaction, real-time correction of common playing errors, as well as the immediate feedback provided by a real live teacher. Internet learning can be a valuable supplement to personal instruction, but bad habits and/or techniques learned via unsupervised internet lessons may need considerable correction by your instructor. Make sure your instruction is well anchored in personal contact with your teacher.
Every student is different and, though there is a standard basic curriculum, each lesson is customized to each student's individual needs, interests and abilities. Rates for private lessons start at $35 per half hour of instruction; a monthly travel stipend is added for lessons held at your location. A deposit is required for materials and sheet music which is not included in these rates. A registration fee in the amount of $50 is required for Fall, Spring and Summer Terms.
Music Theory and Musicianship"Music theory encompasses the nature and mechanics of music. It often involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music: rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture." Wikipedia
Learn to read and understand the written language of music! I say 'language' because like a language, music has its own set of letters, expressions, composition, and rules. A knowledge of music theory is required and practiced in all music lessons. It is through the knowledge of music theory plus musical skills that musicianship blossoms. Many computer aids, software programs and internet resources will be used to enhance student participation and enjoyment.

Music AppreciationMusic surrounds us and is with us from the moment we're born, perhaps earlier. In fact, music has been with us since the birth of mankind in one form or another. Music appreciation is all about learning more about those forms and enhancing our understanding of music, however you define it. You do not have to know anything about music nor do you have to be a musician in order to take this class; you must simply desire to understand more about music. One of the simplest, clearest definitions of music is found here:
To better appreciate music, we need to better understand it. In this class, we learn about sounds, instruments that have been created to make sound; how sounds are documented so that they can be reproduced by others; how to listen to hear and recognize tonality, tempo, dynamics, phrasing, harmonies; how to better understand what the composer communicates through his individual style of music; and much, much more. Group Classes meet online using Skype technology, once per week for six weeks, one hour per week, for a total of six hours. Internet access is a must for doing your research. The rate for each class is $150.00. Class size is limited to allow ample group discussion.
