Plus Some Amazing Information about Music Study!

How do I sign up for piano instruction with you ?

I personally interview each prospective student and/or parent.  This interview can begin by telephone, but I'll need to spend some time with you (with your parents if you're a minor) to determine your level of interest, skill, and talent. Call me!

How much do piano lessons cost ?

Click here for an explanation of tuition, fees, rates and costs.  There are several variables  involved (such as distance to travel,  length of lesson, level of expertise at the piano) which determine individual rates.   There are a number of students receiving my instruction at their own home.   While I love to travel to them, I'm not too excited about the recent increases in gasoline prices!

What methodologies do you employ in your teaching?

I''ve stayed current on most every method designed and employed to teach piano, flute, and music in general.  Some have come and gone just as fashion styles change.

My experience guides me to evaluate which of several solid methods works best for a given student.  Each of us has a unique learning style.   My job is to find that style in each student, then to build on that foundation using any and every method that is compatible with that learning style.

Do I have to have my own piano ?

Only true beginners can get away with using an electronic keyboard to learn to play the piano.  Once the basic knowledge and techniques are acquired, a piano is really needed in order to learn interpretation and musicianship.  A good keyboard may serve its purpose for the first year or two.

Do you teach any other instruments ?

Although I've been trained to teach all instruments, my expertise is with the piano and with the flute.

What is the earliest age that my child can take lessons?

Group piano instruction is a great choice for children ages 4-5.   It provides an excellent foundation for music study.  For other instruments, student physical and mental maturity must be considered.

Will music theory be included in the private lesson?

Yes. Students learn about how music is put together through music theory workbooks that go along with their music books (method books).

How much practice is required each week?

Set aside some time for music practice at least five days out of the week.  Typically, a beginning student practices 20 - 30 minutes a day.  Usually the practicing goes much better if the parent supervises. Home practice is recommended for children ages 6 and up.  For younger group piano students, make time during the week to enjoy musical activities as a family.

Amazing Information!

Why study music?

Studying music has been shown to enhance children’s performance in math and other subjects, increase expressive abilities, foster creativity, develop discipline and a sense of self-worth, and promote cooperation. Music study increases children’s attention span and helps the development of cognitive and motor skills.

Many parents, educators, and students often ask questions about the value of music.  Some of us have been asked why we work so hard to nurture a lifetime love for music and performance.  The following articles will provide many answers about why we believe music should be an integral part of every child's life.

New studies and articles are appearing more and more frequently in music journals, educational journals, even local newspapers.   Music lessons make a significant contribution to so many aspects of our lives!
